Do you know how the camel got his hump? How the rhinoceros wrinkled his skin? Where the leopard found his spots?
Quench your insatiable curiosity during a delightful presentation of
Rudyard Kipling's
Just-So Stories
in dance, music and spoken text.
The great storyteller and later Nobel Prize winner Rudyard Kipling became world-famous as the author of The Jungle Book. One of his lesser-known treasures is his set of Just-So Stories, which humorously tell how certain animals came to look the way they do today. This production adapts a selection of the most charming stories into a presentation of music and dance together with Kipling's poetic text. The music by American composer Kevin Elmore takes the listener on a journey through the jungle and African plains, guided by two dancers, two musicians and an actor who use the rhythm of music, language and movement to become various animals.

What is "interactive dance-theater"?
This touring production by Necessity Arts Collective (NAC) is unique because of its close contact between performers and audience. The performance allows young viewers from ages 6 to 10 to join spontaneously in the storytelling with their own sound effects and by acting out small roles. They become, for example, the voice of the 'scrutiatingly idle camel, summon the Djinn with a ritual of chant and dance, and sing life into the shadows of the jungle.
Workshops
Because the Just-So Stories performance offers varied avenues for the children to participate and interact with the performers, each showing can be immediately preceeded by a workshop lead by the outreach director in collaboration with either one of our dancers, a musician or the costume & set designer. This workshop will emphasize awareness of perception of physical and movement experience. Individual exploration through play, dance and musical abilities flow directly into the performance and become an organic part of the whole event. Physical and vocal or stage elements developed during the workshop will return during the show and allow for spontaneous interaction bewtween audience and artists. Thus artistic and educational approaches meet and the children not only watch, but assist in telling the stories.
In addition, teachers will be given, free of charge, comprehensive materials with practical and content-related suggestions for preparation and follow-up in the classroom.
